“There are so many highlights here – this record sets musical standards few established artists could match.. Just stunning.” – Living Tradition Magazine
Multi-talented Yorkshirewoman Alice Jones is nothing if not versatile – an Appalachian and longsword dancer, an instrumentalist excelling on keyboards, whistle, clarinet, tenor guitar and, as her solo debut album proves, possessing a wholly distinctive voice just made for folk song.
The Ripponden-based artist has a background deeply rooted in the English folk tradition, having first been exposed to folk music by her parents as a “babe in arms”. But she also has a keen interest in American folk song, particularly the vast collections of Cecil Sharp and Frank & Anne Warner.
Her debut album Poor Strange Girl, to be released June 10, is a 12-track transatlantic melting pot mix of light and shade – mostly showcasing her arrangements of traditional and more contemporary songs but including a series of self-penned tunes.
Shining through is her knack of getting right to the heart and soul of a song; a deliberate, expressive tone and heartfelt precision that shows a genuine connection with her chosen material.
“Perhaps the most immediately striking aspect of Alice’s artistry is that she’s a significantly impressive singer. Her voice has real personality and stature with unpretentious forthright Yorkshire relish.”- fRoots
“Her voice is clear, unpretentious and blessed with an appropriate Tyke-ish twang. – English Dance and Song Magazine
‘Superb, sincere vocals; meltingly fine music’ – Verity Sharp, BBC Radio 3
